It is Within Your Reach
My favourite doctrine is, without a doubt, the doctrine of the sovereignty of God. That is, it is the Almighty who is in control of our lives, not Satan, certainly not Karma and definitely not luck. It is God who predestined your life – according to how it pleases Him. Yet at the same time, I never lose sight of the fact that the Lord’s sovereignty leaves enough room for free will. I am responsible for myself and will be held accountable accordingly. So are you. Indeed, you can’t control when and where you were born, yet you are largely responsible for the decisions you make – it is within your reach…
…to make the right choices
As I have hinted already, there is a large chunk of our lives that depends on our decisions and choices. I can give you critical examples of where to live, who to marry, etc. I hope you have also noticed that these choices, good or bad, also have serious effects upon the lives of other people, most particularly those closest to our hearts. Which means we all have a God-given capacity to control the direction of our lives. My grand appeal to you, dear reader, is: make the right choices. Make critical life decisions based on proper planning and wisdom. Be sober-minded when it comes to that. Indeed, some life decisions come at us quickly and demand impromptu decision-making. You need to be mentally stable enough to handle that as well. On the other hand, you must also have a long-term plan about the direction of your life. You need to set clear goals of what you want or who you want to become. Whatever you do, do not do things now that you will regret in the future. Certainly, you would not wish the future generation from your bloodline to be affected by the silly decisions you have made. Choose wisely because you will only live once.
…to serve the Lord
Of all the choices you will ever make, nothing is more serious than the spiritual direction of your life – the choice to serve the Lord. To make your life worthwhile in that aspect. I am reminded of Joshua’s plea to his fellow countrymen: “And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve (Josh 24:15).” That is a take it or leave it deal, signed by the King of eternity Himself. Just above that verse, do not miss servant Joshua stressing with much vigour these words, “truth and sincerity”. It means “serving the Lord” is not mere Christianity that the average citizen is comfortable with. But it’s more than that. It’s a total dedication and giving one’s self completely to the cause of Christ. To say to your good heart, “I will do whatever the Lord wants me to do, wherever that may be and when I am required to do so. I wonder if you have come to that point yet in your Christian walk.
…to seek truth
Again, there is another version of Christianity that keeps me awake at night. That is, most of us are at home with whatever little knowledge we have about Jesus. We are at peace with those few Bible verses we crammed at vacation Bible school. We are content with that spirituality that we got from crusades and conferences. Yet there is still more, a lot more to discover. There remains still a large mine of the riches of Christ, untouched even by the most devout Christian, hidden in the depths of that Bible you carry. We must keep learning, my dear foot soldiers. The Word of God does not reveal its riches to lazy minds. Consult good commentaries, read ancient books, listen to insightful podcasts and watch interesting theological debates. No one will spoon-feed you on some of these things. So you are a gifted leader, so what? So you have been to Bible school, what’s so special about that? So you have experience in this and that, who cares? Still, you have not arrived! You can still start afresh in Genesis 1:1 and get more for your Christian sanctification. It is within your reach to seek the truth.
So, what will it be? Will you drift through life, content with surface-level knowledge and reactive decisions, or will you embrace the profound responsibility that is yours? God, in His infinite wisdom, has granted you the capacity to choose—to choose truth over self-satisfaction, dedication over comfort, and purpose over indifference. The future of your walk, and indeed, the impact you'll have on generations to come, hinges on the choices you make today. Understand this, believe this: it is absolutely within your reach. Reach for it.
