Many believers mistakenly assume that the blood of Jesus Christ was shed to protect us from the devil, demonic spirits and those kind of things. I get really concerned when I hear somebody “applying the blood of Jesus” to their blankets so that witches don’t attack them at night. Scripture, however, reveals a more profound truth about that blood-stained cross. Jesus' blood was shed primarily for the payment and remission of sin, shielding us from God's wrath.
The idea that Jesus' blood protects us from the devil stems from a misunderstanding of biblical teachings. I challenge you with your Bible open, where have you seen the blood of Christ applied to witches and satanists? Just to be clear, I do believe that the devil is real. And that he is a vicious lion roaming about seeking to devour God’s people (1 Pet 5:8). However, Jesus' sacrifice was not primarily directed against him. Instead, it is addressed to humanity's fundamental problem: sin. Scripture emphasizes that Jesus' blood, 1. Paid the penalty for sin (1 Cor 15:3, Rom 3:25). 2. Provided forgiveness and redemption (Eph1:7, Col 1:14). 3. Cleanses us from sin (1 Joh 1:7, Rev 7:14).
Protection from God's Wrath
If we are to mention protection in the same sentence with the blood, it’s the wrath of God that we need protection from. And your Bible is clear that God's wrath abides on unbelievers (Joh 3:36), but Jesus' blood shields believers from this wrath (Rom 5:9). His sacrifice:
1.) Propitiates God's justice (Rom 3:25). – That means that there was a debt that was owed to the Holy One of Israel. Remember, our God is a just judge who must render every soul according to what they deserve. Hence Christ became the down payment or the Sacrifice to appease His anger and satisfy divine justice. It is the blood that made that possible – not just any blood but the pure blood of the Lamb without blemish.
2.) Reconciles us to God (2 Cor 5:18-19). The day that Adam ate the fruit is the day that him and all of us mankind became enemies of God through wicked works (Col 1:21-22). But thanks be unto God, we have been reconciled to our Creator. That was possible through the blood of God’s only begotten Son, Christ Jesus the Lord.
3.) Saves us from God's wrath (Rom 5:9). The word salvation simply means rescue. It is through the blood of Jesus that a divine rescue mission has been accomplished. Jesus' sacrifice satisfied God's justice, appeasing His wrath (Rom 3:25-26). This truth highlights the depth of God's love: He sacrificed His Son to reconcile humanity to Himself.
I for one can testify that I once was blind but now I see. I once was lost but now I am found. All thanks to that “♫fountain filled with blood drawn from Immanuel’s veins; and sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains♪.” Praise His Name Praise His Name!
Conclusion: Friends, and brothers in the Lord, my heart grieves when we ignore the basic truths of this beautiful message, while opting for unbiblical beliefs and practices at the expense of our Savior. It is critical that we understand the purpose of Jesus' death on the cross. I mean let us be wary of misusing the name of Christ to promote witchcraft and mysticism. He died, and bled, not so that we can use His blood to chase goblins, but that our sins may be washed. Let us keep it up that way.
